Everett Audiologist Mike Mallahan made his 11th trip to Guatemala in 2010 to bring children the gift of hearing. Since 2003, Mallahan and other Volunteer audiologists have evaluated over 3,000 children and fitted over 1,200 children with hearing aids in Guatemala.
The Audiology Medical Team travels throughout Guatemalan villages to provide follow up care for some of the children that have been previously fit with hearing aids. Also, they will be bringing more than $20,000 worth of hearing aids to fit on children that have been identified. The Team will be providing additional training for the Guatemalan audio techs that give follow up care to children throughout the year.
The Audiology Medical Team will include four Audiologists, four Guatemalan audio techs, 2 Spanish language translators, and 1 stats support person.
“When you get to see a child that’s maybe 5 or 12 yrs old, and they have never heard their mother’s voice and they are starting the hear their mother’s voice or they’re starting to hear things for the first time – it is pretty awe-inspiring!” says Mallahan.
